SYNOPSIS
While visiting friends in Berlin late in the fall of
1999, I saw a progressive and vibrant city which appeared to be experiencing
a kind of drama different than it had known in the past. Images of Western
materialism dominated nearly every view and while the inhabitants of the city
exhibited a sense of pride in their accomplishments - surprisingly, there was
an obvious longing for nostalgic preservation. Later on a train to Prague,
the landscape that streamed by bore further witness to the clash between the
need to progress and the desire to preserve.
